Objects in mirror are closer than they appear

Have you ever read that on the side mirrors of your car? It's no joke, the objects really are closer. Yesterday I was backing out of my garage thinking to myself, "I can make it." Um, I was wrong. My side mirror took a loud crunch, the mirror is shattered, the plastic is broken, and now I have it all taped together. Sure looks silly. Oh well...
